The Fashion Show names their winners

This year’s fashion show saw 96 garments from students showcased on the runway at Stephens Auditorium.

A plethora of maxi length garments, leather panels, draped satin and flared garments with high low hemlines and saucy back details stole the show.

The winners for the accessories division were Kristie Syring in 1st place with “Grand Majestic,” Nicki Turner in 2nd place with “Opulent Extraction” and Becca Stein in 3rd place with “Branching Out.”

In the category of fiber art, the winner was Samantha Silver with “Vegetable Tanned.” Silver also won 1st place in the Menswear category with “A Hipster goes farming.”

For Fashion Illustration the winners were Mary Anastasia Ward with “Untitled” in 1st place, Taylor Johnston with “Plus size Art Deco” in 2nd place, and Shweta Gaitonde in 3rd place with “Soleil.”

Ward went on to win first place in the professional daywear category with “Lady of the Lake.”

For the Eco-friendly category there was only one winner, Nicki McLellan with “Spuds and Beans.”

“Tailored for Tots” by Molly Charipar was the first place winner in the childrenswear category.

The streetwear category saw 3 students win with Jordan Callahan with “Structured” in first place, Charipar with “An Empire State of Mind” in second place, and McLellan with “Sheer Metamorphasis” in third place.

“An Empire State of Mind” also tied for first place with Nicki Turner’s “Polaroid Escape” in the digital printing category which was judged by first2print, who donated fabric [corrected from: the laser printers used to finish the garments.]

Turner placed first with the same garment in the collections category, with second in the same category Lauren Lee with her line, “Serendipity,” while “Louvour” by Jessie Minor took third place.

Minor placed first with her collection ‘A wolf in ‘chic’ skin” in the special occasion category. She was followed in second place by “An Achromatic Allurement” by Sara Kinderknecht, and third in the same category was “The Dark Night” by Taylor Johnson.

Two pieces placed in the wearable art category, the untitled coiled bra by Mary Baggenstoss took second place to Zachary Davis’ “Bleeding Love” dress. The first place graduate piece was “Flower Armour” by Lingling Min.

Christopher Dove won the portfolio category with his self-titled piece.

Many audience members took to a vote using their cell phones for the people’s choice category, with the “Captiva” collection by Brittanee Heaning winning out.

The biggest award, “Best in Show,” was given to the first look from “Papillon Coquillage” by McLellan, who also won the most awards of any designer in the show.

Todd Snyder representative and Iowa State alumni Cole Kersey took to the stage for the final award presentation, the award of a paid Todd Snyder internship for this Summer in the New York City headquarters. This was won by Eileen Moores who graciously took to the stage to accept.
