Veishea offers tons of free food throughout the week

Julie Young

Cheap college students unite. At Veishea 2007, there is an abundance of cheap or free food available for the thriftiest ISU students.

Barbecues on Central Campus

Beginning Monday, anyone who purchases a $5 Veishea button can eat for free from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Central Campus.

The menu includes a variety of college favorites, with hamburgers on Monday, walking tacos on Tuesday, pulled pork on Wednesday, sub sandwiches on Thursday and pizza on Friday.

In addition, the Veishea buttons can be presented for discounts at area businesses, making them ideal for the cheap and hungry.

Faculty Breakfast

Although free food is highly appealing to college students, ISU faculty and staff are not left out of the free food frenzy. On Wednesday, there will be the free Faculty Breakfast from 7 to 8 a.m. on Central Campus.

Frederiksen Court BBQ

On Thursday, a free barbecue will be available for students from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Frederiksen Court Courtyard. The meal is sponsored by the Fredriksen Court Council to celebrate the night before activities and tournaments.

Pancakes galore

Well, it’s almost free. Both Friday and Saturday, the annual Midnight Pancake Feed will take place from midnight until 3 a.m. north of the Campanile. This popular event brings long lines, but provides all-you-can-eat pancakes to satisfy late night cravings for only $2.

From 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday morning, there will be a $5 all-you-can eat Pancake Breakfast on Central Campus before the parade. While this is a more costly option, all of the proceeds benefit the Veishea scholarship funds. Portable pancakes will also be sold along the parade route for people on the move.

Midnight Wing Feed

On Saturday night a Midnight Wing Feed will overlap the Midnight Pancake Feed from midnight until 3:30 a.m. For $2, students can get six wings just south of the Campanile. It has yet to be mentioned whether Cy will attend this event.

Candy, candy, candy!

Aside from amazing floats, horses, fire trucks and marching bands, parades everywhere are judged by candy output.

The Veishea parade passes this test with flying colors and begins at 10:40 a.m. Saturday. It has the ability to provide an ample amount of free candy, if individuals can rise to the challenge against local 5-year-olds.

Have your cake and eat it too

On Saturday afternoon, ISU President Gregory Geoffroy will speak outside Beardshear Hall to usher in Iowa State’s 150th birthday. As no birthday celebration is complete without cake, more than 20,000 pieces of free birthday cake will be given away from 1 until 1:30 p.m.
