Breaking News Updates:

4:45 p.m. Tuesday: ISU Police have blocked off areas around Lake LaVerne, near the

Memorial Union, and parts of Lincoln Way in relation to the search for

missing ISU student Abel Bolanos, sophomore in English. They have

called in extra law enforcement officials to help block off the area.

CyRide routes have been redirected. They are rerouting pedistrians

from the north sidewalk of Lincoln Way and Lake LaVerne and asking that

they use the south sidewalk.

Developing Story:

Volunteers and rescue teams are scouring the area where a missing ISU student was believed to be last walking home from a party around 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

Abel Bolanos, sophomore in English, has been missing since early Saturday morning when he was last seen leaving a party at 208 S. Hyland Ave. Bolanos was believed to be heading south on Hyland toward his residence hall, 2303 Wallace Rambo.

Search efforts have been taking place all morning and afternoon and will continue through the evening.

“The phone is [ringing] off the hook,” said Katherine Lundberg, junior in English and employee at Student Activities Center.

The Student Activities Center, which has organized volunteer search efforts for Bolanos through Thursday, hopes they don’t last that long.

“We have shifts for today and shifts through Thursday right now, but hopefully we won’t need them,” Lundberg said.

With more than 100 phone calls flooding the Student Activities Center today, other students have taken their own measures as well.

Christopher Duncan, who had a class with Bolanos, has created a Facebook group to help recruit volunteers for a separate search group.

“For the most part, we got about 1,000 members and it’s only been up for less than a day,” Duncan said. “A lot of people are messaging asking what they can do.”

Duncan, sophomore in mathematics, remains optimistic and hopes that he is “just lost somewhere.”

Members of the Government of the Student Body are also taking proactive measures in the search for Bolanos.

“Basically, we are just doing what the dean of students has suggested,” said Emily Jensen, GSB president and senior in political science. “We don’t want to hinder other efforts.”

Bolanos is a white male, 5-feet-7-inches tall and 165 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes, according to an ISU press release.

ISU police are asking for assistance from anyone who has information regarding Bolanos’ disappearance or whereabouts. To report information, contact the ISU police at 515-294-4428.

Police are also asking that the person who turned in Bolanos’ credit and debit card Monday morning contact the police with information regarding the condition and findings of the bank cards.

“My heart, and I certainly know many student’s hearts, go out to the family,” Jensen said. “We have really seen the community come together.”
