New cabinet members to be confirmed by GSB

The Government of the Student Body will vote Wednesday night to confirm 10 new cabinet members who will serve under GSB President T.J. Schneider and Vice President Joe Darr during their term.

Schneider said although the cabinet is relatively smaller than ones of the past, its size will allow members to communicate effectively with each other and accomplish more over the year.

“I think Joe and I put together a good group of people who are really going to work for students,” Schneider said.

“The cabinet is where a lot of stuff gets done, but nobody really recognizes that,” said Rick Cordaro, chief of staff. He said many students may not be aware of what the GSB executive cabinet does.

Schneider and Darr appointed the following students to serve on the cabinet during their term:

Rick Cordaro, chief of staff

Niki Garrett, government secretary

Erin Roy, government treasurer

Heather Mitchell, director of academic affairs

Mike Banasiak, director of government relations

Andy Tofilon, director of information technology

Rebecca Trimble, director of public information

Andrew Hamilton, director of safety, traffic and transportation

Kristy Stallmann, director of student affairs

Dave Boike, finance director (ex-officio member)

“Every single person on cabinet has been involved in GSB or another campus organization that relates to their job,” Cordaro said.

He said the cabinet has a wealth of experienced members, including four former senators, two former cabinet members and a former GSB president.

Schneider said each of the members brings unique qualities to the group, but all cabinet members are self-motivated people who are enthusiastic and who will bring new ideas to the government.

Schneider and Cordaro agreed a smaller cabinet size will make the group more effective and will allow them to communicate better with each other than cabinets of the past.

“Our size is a strong point, but getting students involved in committees will be a challenge,” Cordaro said.

“We’ll be actively recruiting members of other student organizations.”

Cordaro said he would especially like to see freshmen get involved on the cabinet committees this term and encourages all students to participate.

The first cabinet meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Room 201 of the Memorial Union.

“I would like students to know the cabinet, just as the senate, is here to work for students,” Cordaro said. “We want students to get involved.”

Cordaro said he believes the senate will approve of all 10 newly appointed cabinet members Wednesday night.

The Government of the Student Body will meet at 7 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. The following issues will be discussed:

Special Orders

A senate order to seat David J. Boike as the finance director.

A senate order to seat Richard Cordaro as chief of staff.

A senate order to seat all new cabinet members (listed above).

New Business

A senate order to allocate $1,952 from the Senate Discretionary Account to fund the B.R.A.D. 21 Program.
