Parking proposal passes

The Government of the Student Body voted 26-6 last night in favor of a $12.5 million DPS parking proposal to increase campus parking for students, faculty and staff.

“I believe the GSB approval was critical to get this action going forward,” said DPS Capt. Doug Houghton.

If all goes well, the first phase – a $2.5 million parking project at the stadium – will be complete by next fall and will provide 600 additional spaces, Houghton said.

Now is the ideal time to complete an parking project with the current low interest rates and the cooperation of the ISU Athletic Department paying for part of the project’s expenses, said Tony Luken, LAS.

“I think this by far is the best time to act,” he said.

Six senators voted against the parking proposal, which they said may not benefit all students.

Some senators felt the project may provide more advantages to staff than to the students.

“I really don’t believe we should be supporting all this extra parking for the faculty,” said Alex Rodeck, off campus.
