GSB passes bill to increase lighting on ISU campus

Let there be light.

The Government of the Student Body Senate passed a bill to spend $24,000 on campus lighting at its meeting Wednesday night.

The senate unanimously passed the bill to install 21 lights around campus. At the top of the lighting priority list are the area around the College of Design and the bike path near the Lied Recreation Center, which are slated to be in place before the end of the semester, said GSB President Andy Tofilon.

The remaining lights will be in place by the end of the Fall 2002 semester, because they have to be bided out by law, he said.

“We’re very excited about this project,” Tofilon said. “We can prove yet again GSB can make a difference.”

GSB has been working with the administration for the past decade to get this project done, Tofilon said.

Each light costs $2,500, and the university will contribute $20,000, he said. Once the lights are in place, the administration will be responsible for the maintenance of them, Tofilon said.

The senate also approved a resolution congratulating Pete Englin as the new Dean of Students.

Next week, the senate will discuss a bill to eliminate the filling fee for organizations filling for allocations through GSB.

“We have this money budgeted, so there is no reason we should take it from student groups,” said Speaker of the Senate Andrew Kothenbeutel.

The bill would not take effect until next semester.

Currently, if a student organization wants to apply for GSB allocations, they must pay a $10 filling fee, Kothenbeutel said. The fee is most often given back to the organization when they receive their allocations, he said.

“This process is a waste of time,” Kothenbeutel said.
