Campaigning for the 1997-98 Government of the Student Body elections is under way.

Candidates are given two weeks to campaign for the executive and senatorial positions. The three-day election will be Feb. 25-27.

The list of candidates was released Sunday night. Five executive slates will be running for the presidential and vice presidential positions. Candidates needed 2,000 student signatures in order to be eligible to run for office.

The executive candidates are: Todd Swanson, a junior in accounting, and Amber Powell, a junior in dietetics; Rob Wiese, a senior in agriculture studies, and Matt McLaren, a junior in agriculture business; LaRhonda Potts, a senior in business, and Rob Ruminski, a sophomore in history; Rory Flaherty, a junior in construction engineering, and Jeff Halliburton, a junior in anthropology; and Brad Lozan, a sophomore in chemical engineering, and Melissa Cross, a sophomore in child and family services.

A presidential debate will be held at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 18 in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union.

A vice presidential debate will take place on Friday, Feb. 21 in Rooms 244 and 246 of the Memorial Union.

All candidates will appear in a debate scheduled for Monday, Feb. 24 at noon in the Oak Room of the Memorial Union.

Carolyn Jones, GSB vice president, had a few words of advice for the new candidates. “I would encourage all candidates to have their constituents in mind when campaigning. I think five is a nice number. It gives people a lot of choices. It makes it exciting.”

GSB President Adam Gold said he is looking forward to watching this election on the sidelines. “I’m looking forward to this year’s campaign. There is no clear front-runner now.”
