Finding the right timeless timepiece

A watch can act as the perfect timeless staple is anyone’s closet. It is the perfect accessory for any man or woman to represent themselves in any style they choose.

The art of timekeeping dates back all the way to Early B.C. when ancient civilizations would use sundials to help with harvest timing. The first “wristwatch” was invented in 1812 for Caroline Murat, the Queen of Naples. Over centuries, the watch has evolved into what is today, an accessory available in a variety of styles, used to help express one’s individual personality and style.

With all the styles, shapes, sizes and colors available it can be hard to find the right watch, so here are our top tips for finding the perfect match to your timeless timepiece and how to wear it in style.

1. Find a watch that best represents you and your sense of style. The key to looking great is being confident, and your confidence can translate to your attire.

“Having whatever you like and putting your own twist on it” Maddy Hessel, assistant manager at Fossil in West Des Moines, Iowa said about how to ensure a good match. For example, if gold is your thing, find a gold watch that has a flare that matches your personal style, like one with a colored face or embellished accents.

2. The more simple the watch, the more versatile it becomes. Like most college students, we don’t have the ability to buy and own numerous watches for all of our different outfits. The solution is investing in one simple, classic piece that matches multiple outfits a week.

3. Ensure the watch speaks to what your attire says. For example, pair a sport watch with workout attire rather than a nice button-up shirt. Nothing kills an outfit more than pairing it with the wrong accessories. Wearing a sport watch with business attire sends the message that the little details don’t matter and you forgot to switch your watch before attending an important meeting. If the watch doesn’t flow with the outfit, leave it for another time.

4. Wear the watch on the opposite hand you write with. This started when doctors were constantly writing prescriptions for patients and needed to include the time and date. It was easier to check the time when the watch was worn on the free hand – thus the trend emerged and still continues.

5. Watches come in an assortment of prices, so there’s one for every budget. Prices can range from thousands of dollars to as low as twenty (or even cheaper)! Price is no excuse to not add this staple to your closet to help enhance and express who you are.
